  • Choosing a Method of NFP
    Choosing a Method of NFP
Just as there are multiple healthy diets, television channels, and cars, there are multiple methods of NFP. This allows couples to choose a method that fits their lifestyle, temperaments, and budget. Choosing a method does not have to be a one and done deal – many couples find that different methods “fit” better at different times. This is not a flaw! It's normal to switch from, say, a sympto-thermal method before children to a mucus-only method during breastfeeding.

Either way, your teachers will be there to guide you through transition times and help you learn to recognize your signs of fertility and interpret your chart. Don't be afraid or embarrassed to ask questions! There is no question your instructor has not answered (or even asked!) before. Many instructors will be happy to offer an introduction to their method while you are trying to decide which one you want to learn.

A more thorough description of each method offered in our Diocese may be found below.

Family of the Americas Ovulation Method
    • “Family of the Americas Foundation (FAF) was founded in 1977 as a non-profit educational organization dedicated to promoting programs for the family as well as uplifting and strengthening women and families worldwide. Through education in the Ovulation Method of Natural Family Planning, we help couples who are trying to conceive or those who wish to postpone pregnancy.”

Couple To Couple League Sympto-Thermal Method
    • “The Sympto-Thermal Method (STM) taught by CCL is based on three key signs of fertility: cervical mucus, basal body temperature and changes in the cervix. By observing and recording these signs you and your spouse will be able to identify Phase I, II and III and therefore know if you’re in a time of fertility or infertility.”

    Northwest Family Services Sympto-Thermal Method
    • “SymptoPro Fertility Education teaches the Sympto-Thermal Method (STM) of NFP and has been providing quality Natural Family Planning education for over 30 years. Our classes are informative, personal, and discreet. More and more couples are discovering the joy of NFP, and in response, we offer two ways to take our course. Purchase of any of type of course includes lifetime support from your NFP Instructor at no extra charge.”

    Marquette Method
    • "The Marquette Method is a Sympto-Hormonal Method (SHM) of natural family planning (NFP). Couples can observe signs of fertility and track that information to avoid or achieve pregnancy.
The Marquette Method uses two main indicators to determine fertility: cervical mucus observations and urinary hormone measurements. One or both signs are tracked based on user preference, and then combined with a simple protocol to determine the fertile window.
The Marquette Method has optional instructions for incorporating basal body temperature (BBT), urine luteinizing hormone (LH) tests, and urine progesterone tests to help be more precise in identifying fertility."

    Boston Cross Check
    • As one of the first methods of natural fertility awareness to utilize the three major signs of fertility, with a choice of at-home hormonal monitoring, cervical fluid, and temperature tracking, BCC is an ideal choice for women looking to blend the tried and true with the latest technology!

    Creighton Model Fertility Care System
    • “The Creighton Model FertilityCare™ System (CrMS) is a standardized modification of the Billings Ovulation Method. It is built on research, education and service (the “triangle of support” for the CrMS user) and is an integrated educational system designed to assure the highest quality service delivery possible for the FertilityCare™ Educator, Practitioner and the client couple.”

  • Another useful resource

    • FEMM is an online resource that helps women learn more about their overall health in relation to their fertility. Women can track their cycles on their downloadable app, talk to teachers, and have an abundance of resoures at their fingertips.

"FEMM recognizes that ovulation is a sign of health, and empowers women to be agents in the management and care of their overall reproductive health and well-being." (femmhealth.org/aboutus)

(please note: this method is available online/via downloadable app)
